The North Face at SFMOMA

A walk-through tunnel of CNC-cut cardboard for The North Face's “It's More Than a Jacket” installation at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. It opened at SFMOMA's First Thursday on October 6, 2022. The North Face's press release credits the piece as “fabricated by Austin Custom CNC.”

What we built

The piece, “The Jacket: Layers of Storytelling,” was designed with Grayscale Studio, Experience Research Lab and House of Sorcery, and made from recycled and post-consumer materials, including jackets from The North Face Renewed. We cut the structure from 1 in. corrugated cardboard as a series of ribs that form the tunnel.

How it ran

The cardboard had to pass SFMOMA's flame test, which it did on September 16, 2022. We built and installed the piece on site on October 4 and 5. Preview Events produced the event, and the agency contract was with United Entertainment Group.
